President's Message
Greetings ARMA Madison Members,
It’s hard to believe another successful year for our Chapter has flown by again. While the faces of the Board remain familiar, most of us are stepping into new roles (me included) and are eager to provide everyone with quality content and pertinent discussions over the upcoming months.
It’s an interesting time for records and archives. AI is dominating discussions in the workplace while we’re still swamped with an overwhelming amount of paper and electronic documents. Asking for clearer governance guidance can clash with a desire from businesses to quickly push ahead into technological advancement. These are topics I’ve seen at the forefront of our minds while attending industry webinars and events. My hope for this Chapter is that we can continue to learn and collaborate with each other while navigating the new realities of information management.
I encourage you to reach out if you’re interested in being on the board. I understand the hesitancy you might be feeling at reading the previous sentence; trust me, I was there. I was worried about the time commitment and my experience since I came to records management as a mid-career switch and was new to the field. All my worries were unfounded, and I’d love for you to attend a board meeting to see what it entails.
If you have ideas or presenters you’d like to see or you are interested in attending a board meeting, please feel free to reply to this message. The goal of our Chapter is to support you so please don’t hesitate to start a conversation.
I hope everyone has a great rest of their summer and we look forward to serving you over the next year.
Thank you,
Bridget McMahon

arma mADISON tOURS THE SAPF
On April 30, ARMA Madison and friends toured the Wisconsin State Archive Preservation Facility (SAPF). The SAPF is operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS), whose mission is to connect people to the past by collecting, preserving, and sharing stories.
Opened in March 2018 and spanning over 188,000 square feet, the SAPF protects Wisconsin’s historical artifacts and archives, ensuring access for future reference and research. The state-of-the-art facility includes a controlled environment to maintain stable temperature and humidity, freezers, cold storage for film and color photographs, a conservation lab to repair artifacts, secure storage, and spaces for archival digitization projects.
The tour was a great opportunity to connect with other RIM practitioners and learn about the processes to collect and preserve Wisconsin and national historical artifacts. The WHS Records Officer shared the process to collect and maintain state and local government records in the State Archives.
Some tour highlights include 800- to 4,500-year old canoes recovered from Madison's Lake Mendota, a sword from Chris Farley's Beverly Hills Ninja movie, and an Oscar Meyer Wienermobile.
Thanks to those that joined us and to the WHS staff for a great tour!
